The smaller size and softer bodies of the lobstersmake these ideally suited for most pets. We typically send a mixed colony of sizes ranging from a fraction of an inch up to adults of approximately 1 1/4". When deciding how many to start with you need to consider what animal you have to feed. Lobster roaches are very prolific breeders, so even if you start with a small group, they will make a good-sized colony in just a few months if you let them. Many people ask to start their own colony and have good success starting with a mixed sizes order to begin with. To house my colony I use large Rubbermaid tubs as my main containers. Place several egg carton upright in the tub, being sure not to let them settle into each other. A paper food dish is easy to use and replace every so often.
Lobsters
We believe lobster roaches are superior to crickets for many reasons, as reptile owners are quickly discovering. Unlike crickets, lobster roaches do not smell, are quiet, easy to contain and maintain with little effort. They also provide more meat to shell ratio and are therefore healthier. Many reptiles will pick out the roaches to eat and not the crickets!

are capable of climbing. You will need a barrier around the top of the tub to prevent them from escaping. I like to use Vaseline. Others use vegetable oil. You can paint a 2-3" band inside around the top to be effective. Our special roach food blend contains chicken laying mash, a pelted food fortified with calcium for laying hens, mixed with dry puppy chow which makes a fine staple dry feed. . Use your scrap fruit and vegetables also, like potato peels which they really like. I provide no standing water for the colony. This will tend to just get fouled and provide a place for young roaches to drown. Moisture is provided through fresh fruits and greens, including apples and potatoes. Apples & potatoes are cheap and the roaches eat the entire thing. A light water misting of the egg carton every few days will also aid in providing sufficient humidity and moisture. |
